Getting out of my comfort zone
Hi, I'm Emma, the Digital Marketing Manager here at DoCurious. Last week, I had the amazing opportunity to get out of my comfort zone and try one of our very own challenge providers for myself. I did hot yoga at YogaRIOT.
Here's how that went for me.
1. I sweat... a lot.
When they say hot yoga, they mean it. The room is heated to 98 degrees Fahrenheit, which feels extra hot when you walk in after being in the December Portland air. But, after a few minutes your body starts to adjust, and you feel increasingly more relaxed. As I became increasingly relaxed, it also became easier for me to lean into the poses and stretch deeper. So, ultimately I think the room being hot significantly improved my practice because of my ability to deepen the stretches. The sweat is worth it.
2. I need to work on my flexibility
The longer I was on the mat the more I realized how much tension we hold in our bodies, sitting at desks all day. It's not good for you! This class taught me about areas of my body I didn't even know I was tense in, and I felt increasingly aware of how much letting go of my physical tension was helping my relax my mind too.
3. I felt relaxed even after the class
My takeaway? Even though it was challenging for me, I felt amazing after the class. I felt extremely relaxed, accomplished, and proud of myself for trying something new and pushing myself out of my comfort zone. I even slept better that night. It wasn't easy, but I'm glad I did it and I'm looking forward to trying it again and improving. Everyone starts somewhere.
